Caterpillars can be a frustrating problem when growing cannabis outdoors. They leave behind visible signs such as missing leaf chunks and clumps of caterpillar droppings on the leaves. Spotting caterpillars in action can be infuriating. However, there are effective ways to combat these pests and protect your cannabis plants.

Cause of Issue
◉ Caterpillars, worms, cabbage loopers All common pests that attack cannabis plants outdoors.
Symptoms
◉ Missing leaf chunks from caterpillar feeding. ◉ Clumps of black/brown caterpillar droppings on the leaves. ◉ Sight of caterpillars actively eating the leaves.
Corrective Actions
◉ BT Caterpillar Spray: This safe and effective biological insecticide contains the bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis (BT), which kills the caterpillar larvae and prevents them from eating. It can also control other cannabis pests like fungus gnats, worms, and moths. Apply the spray as soon as you notice leaf damage, caterpillars, or caterpillar droppings. Mist both the tops and bottoms of leaves thoroughly, and reapply after heavy rain. BT spray is harmless to humans and can be used up until the day of harvest. ◉ Spinosad Products: Although not as effective against caterpillars as BT, Spinosad can be a good choice if your plants are also dealing with other insects like aphids, spider mites, thrips, or whiteflies. Spinosad products are organic and safe for pets, children, and plants. They can be sprayed directly on caterpillars or applied to the soil when watering plants to target them systemically. ◉ Discourage Butterflies and Moths: Since butterflies and moths lay eggs that hatch into caterpillars, it's important to discourage their presence in your garden to prevent future infestations. ◉ Remember, it's crucial to follow the recommended instructions and repeat treatments as necessary until the caterpillar problem is resolved.
