Cannabis plants can exhibit both male and female characteristics, resulting in what growers refer to as hermaphrodite or "hermie" plants. This occurrence is known as hermaphroditism, where male pollen sacs and female flowers grow on the same plant. The presence of "bananas" or elongated stamens among the pistils of the buds is another sign of hermaphroditism. Hermies can be triggered by stress, such as heat or excessive light, but can also be a genetic trait inherent in certain strains. It is advisable to remove hermaphrodite plants promptly to prevent pollination, as the pollinated buds will produce seeds.

Cause of Issue
◉ Genetic predisposition and strains with hermaphroditic traits. ◉ Environmental stressors like inconsistent light schedules, light leaks, high temperatures, and excessive light. ◉ Major plant problems such as nutrient deficiencies and pest infestations can trigger hermaphroditism.
Symptoms
◉ Presence of male pollen sacs (stamens) among female flowers (pistils) ◉ Development of "bananas" or elongated stamens in the buds ◉ Mixed male and female characteristics on the same plant ◉ Risk of self-pollination and seed production ◉ Reduced quality and yield of buds
Corrective Actions
◉ Regularly inspect plants for any signs of hermaphroditism and remove affected plants immediately to prevent accidental pollination. ◉ Maintain consistent and appropriate light schedules, avoiding light leaks during the dark period. ◉ Control temperature levels within the recommended range (65-85°F or 18-30°C) and avoid drastic temperature fluctuations. ◉ Ensure that plants receive the right amount of light intensity to prevent light-burn stress. ◉ Address major plant problems promptly, including nutrient deficiencies, nutrient burn, and pest infestations. ◉ Start with trusted genetics by purchasing feminized seeds from reputable breeders to minimize the risk of hermaphroditic traits in offspring.
