Re-vegging, short for re-vegetation, refers to the process where a cannabis plant that has already started flowering re-enters the vegetative stage. Most cannabis plants are photoperiod strains, meaning they require long nights (typically 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness) to initiate flower/bud production. When these plants receive light during their dark period, even if it's just a small amount like a blinking LED in a grow tent, they can respond by re-vegging.

Re-vegging is triggered when a flowering plant experiences light exposure during its 12-hour dark period. Even a few interrupted nights or a minor light leak can initiate the re-vegging process. The plant undergoes significant internal changes during this period, resulting in various leaf symptoms and altered growth patterns.

Cause of Issue
◉ Re-vegging occurs when a flowering plant receives light during its dark period, causing a disruption in its flowering cycle. This can happen if a plant is exposed to any light source, such as a blinking LED or insufficient darkness, especially during the critical 12-hour dark phase.
Symptoms
◉ Smooth leaf edges ◉ Stunted bud development ◉ Long leaves or new stems emerging from bud sites ◉ Main stem sprouting single-point leaves (rather than the typical 7 or 9 "fingers" per leaf) ◉ Curling leaves resembling heat stress ◉ Wrinkled, twisted, or abnormal growth
Corrective Actions
◉ Allow the plant to complete the re-vegetation process if you desire it to remain in the vegetative stage. ◉ Correct the light periods by eliminating any light leaks and ensuring the plant receives 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness per day, encouraging it to return to the flowering stage. ◉ Note that the time required for re-vegging plants to revert back to flowering and resume bud development varies. Plants in advanced flowering stages may take a month or more to re-veg, while those in the early flowering stage can transition back relatively faster. ◉ It's important to remain calm if you observe your cannabis plant re-vegging and assess your preference for the vegetative or flowering stage. With a little time and proper care, your plant will return to normal growth patterns and thrive once again.
