Barnacle scales, also known as wax scales, are unusual bugs that can be found on the stems and under the leaves of plants. These scale insects attach themselves to the plant and remain stationary once they find a favorable spot. They resemble round growths or bugs and have a tendency to steal energy from the plant. Scale infestations can weaken plants and may lead to the release of a sweet sticky substance called "honeydew," which can attract ants and cause sooty mold to develop on the plant.

Cause of Issue
◉ Barnacle scales infest plants and feed on their stems and leaves, extracting nutrients and weakening the plant. The infestation can occur when adult scales lay eggs on the plant, and the nymphs then settle and attach themselves to the plant surface.
Symptoms
◉ Presence of round growths or bug-like structures on the plant's stems and leaves. ◉ Honeydew secretion, a sticky substance that may be present on the plant's surface. ◉ Attraction of ants to the honeydew. ◉ Development of dark patches of sooty mold on the plant.
Corrective Actions
◉ Removal with a power sprayer: Use a One-Hand Pressure Sprayer to physically spray off the barnacle scales from the plant. This method can effectively eliminate the majority of the bugs. Alternatively, heavily infested parts of the plant can be removed or rubbed off. ◉ Insecticidal soaps: Fatty acid salts or insecticidal soaps can weaken the outer shell of barnacle scales. Apply these soaps to the affected areas of the plant, ensuring thorough coverage. Follow-up applications may be necessary. ◉ Neem Oil: Neem oil is an all-natural remedy that is effective against various types of bugs and mold, including scales. Spray the leaves evenly using a mister or One-Hand Pressure Sprayer. However, avoid allowing Neem oil to come into contact with buds, as it may leave an unpleasant taste or smell. ◉ Spinosad: Spinosad products, which are organic and safe for pets, children, and plants, can be effective against barnacle scales. Liberally spray the affected areas, including under the leaves, ensuring full coverage. While it may kill some scales on contact, thorough application is crucial due to their hard shells. ◉ Essentria IC3: Essentria IC3 Insecticide is an organic mix of horticultural oils. It can be used regularly to combat scales, particularly broad mites or russet mites. Apply it with a mister or One-Hand Pressure Sprayer, covering all the leaves evenly. Note that its effectiveness lasts for approximately 8 hours. ◉ Beneficial insects: Introduce beneficial insects such as lady beetles, ladybugs, and lacewings to the garden. They can help control scale populations by consuming them. However, their impact may not be sufficient if the infestation has already become severe. ◉ Remember to assess the severity of the infestation and choose the most appropriate solution accordingly.
