Leafhoppers are common pests for outdoor cannabis growers. They belong to the insect family Cicadellidae and come in various species, including the Graphocephala coccinea, also known as the "candy-striped," "red-banded," "scarlet and green," or "red and blue" leafhopper. These colorful insects can be found on cannabis plants in North and Central America. Leafhoppers feed on the plant's sap and may leave spots on the leaves. The potato leafhopper, in particular, can cause a disorder called "hopperburn," which leads to the death of leaf ends. Leafhoppers can also transmit plant diseases like beet curly top virus.

Cause of Issue
◉ Leafhoppers infest cannabis plants, particularly in dry conditions. ◉ Different species of leafhoppers, including potato leafhoppers and beet leafhoppers, can cause damage and transmit diseases.
Symptoms
◉ Presence of bright-colored leafhoppers, including red, yellow, green, and purple variations. ◉ White specks or spots on cannabis leaves. ◉ Damage to the leaves, such as spots, discoloration, and yellowing. ◉ "Hopperburn" caused by the potato leafhopper, resulting in the death of leaf ends.
Corrective Actions
◉ Regularly check your plants for signs of leafhoppers, especially during dry periods. ◉ Spinosad products can be used as an organic and safe insecticide to kill leafhoppers. Apply them directly to the affected areas. ◉ Insecticidal soaps containing fatty acid salts are effective in weakening leafhoppers' outer shells. Apply them carefully to the plants, ensuring coverage. ◉ Neem oil, while effective against leafhoppers, should be used cautiously as it may leave an unpleasant taste and smell on buds. Avoid contact with flowering plants and ensure even application. ◉ Introduce beneficial insects like lady beetles, parasitic wasps, and lacewings, which naturally prey on leafhoppers. ◉ Utilize floating row covers to physically prevent leafhoppers from reaching your plants while allowing light and water penetration. ◉ Pyrethrin-based insecticides can be used as a last resort, but caution must be taken to minimize harm to bees. Apply them during the evening or nighttime when bees are less active. ◉ Remember to choose the most suitable method for your specific situation and consider the potential impact on beneficial insects and the environment.
