Marijuana plants experiencing nitrogen toxicity display a set of characteristic symptoms. The leaves appear dark green and shiny, and they develop a claw-like shape with bent ends. This clawing effect is unique to nitrogen toxicity and is often mistaken for overwatering. As the condition progresses, the affected leaves may turn yellow and eventually brown before falling off. It's important to note that yellowing caused by nitrogen toxicity is distinct from other nutrient deficiencies, as the rest of the plant remains dark green.
Cause of Issue
◉ Excessive provision of nitrogen, especially during the flowering stage
◉ Common among new growers who unintentionally overuse nitrogen-rich nutrients
◉ Time-release soil formulations continuing to supply nitrogen during flowering
Symptoms
◉ Dark green leaves and foliage
◉ Claw-like bending of leaves, resembling talons
◉ Yellowing of affected leaves
◉ Possible nutrient deficiencies or signs of nutrient burn
◉ Random occurrence of clawing leaves
Aggravation of symptoms due to heat or pH issues
◉ Progressive yellowing, spotting, and eventual death of clawed leaves
Corrective Actions
◉ Reduce nitrogen intake for the plants
◉ Adjust nutrient feedings and decrease nitrogen-rich supplements
◉ Utilize nutrient formulas specifically formulated for the flowering stage with lower nitrogen levels
◉ Flush the plants with filtered and pH-adjusted water to eliminate excess nitrogen from the soil
◉ Note that affected leaves may not recover, but new leaves should no longer exhibit toxicity symptoms
