Spider mites are a type of mite that belongs to the same family as spiders, ticks, and other mites. They are common pests that can infest cannabis plants and are notoriously difficult to eliminate. The first sign of spider mite damage is the presence of tiny specks or bite marks on the leaves, which appear as tiny specks or discoloration.
Cause of Issue
◉ Spider mites infest cannabis plants to feed on the contents of individual plant cells.
◉ They can be introduced into a grow room through contaminated clones, plants, or by visiting other infested grow spaces.
◉ Spider mites are more likely to thrive in hot and dry environments with stagnant air.
◉ Outdoor gardens can become susceptible to spider mite infestations if infected plants are brought in or if preventive measures are not taken.
◉ Some species of spider mites are specialized in infesting cannabis plants and may already possess resistance to common control methods.
Symptoms
◉ Tiny specks or bite marks on the leaves
◉ Yellowing or bronzing of leaves with clusters of speckles
◉ Webbing on leaves and buds in severe infestations
Corrective Actions
Step 1: Kill Them!
◉ Azamax: Use Azamax, a time-tested insecticide, by spraying it on the leaves and soil. Repeat the treatment and ensure thorough coverage.
◉ Spinosad Products: Spinosad-based products are organic and safe for plants, pets, and humans. They can be used directly on the plant or applied to the roots when watering.
◉ Essentria IC3: This organic insecticide, containing horticultural oils, is safe for humans and effective against spider mites. Apply it using a mister or sprayer.
Insecticidal soaps: Use fatty acid salts or insecticidal soaps to weaken the outer shell of spider mites. Ensure complete coverage, but avoid getting the solution on buds.
◉ Doktor Doom Spider Mite Knockout Spray: This spray is potent against spider mites but can be harsh on plants. Use it as a last resort and with caution.
◉ Other options: Bleach solution, alcohol and water mixture, SM-90, neem oil, and insect predators like ladybugs can also be effective in controlling spider mites.
Step 2: Follow Up Again in 2-3 Days
◉ Apply a different treatment to target any surviving adults and their eggs. The second treatment helps address any resistance that may have developed.
Step 3: Repeat If Necessary
◉ Repeat steps 1 and 2 at least once to ensure complete eradication of spider mites. Their life cycle varies, and treating the area again helps prevent a reinfestation.
Step 4: Protect Your Plants
◉ Implement preventive measures to minimize the risk of future spider mite infestations:
◉ Thoroughly inspect new plants or clones for spider mites before introducing them to your grow space.
◉ Keep your grow area clean and tidy, removing dead plant matter regularly.
◉ Maintain proper airflow and ventilation to create an unfavorable environment for spider mites.
◉ Consider using diatomaceous earth on the soil and surrounding areas to deter spider mites.
◉ Monitor your plants closely and take immediate action at the first signs of spider mites.
◉ Remember, prevention is key to avoiding spider mite problems. By being vigilant and proactive, you can protect your cannabis plants from these pests.
