Stink bugs, a diverse group of insects, have been known to pose a threat to cannabis plants. They exhibit distinctive behavior such as laying clusters of white eggs, which later hatch into small beetle-like insects. As they progress through their life stages, stink bugs undergo physical transformations, displaying variations in appearance from nymphs to adults. Notably, stink bugs possess a pungent odor, making them all the more bothersome.

Cause of Issue
◉ Stink bugs, such as the conchuela stink bug (Chlorochroa ligata), attack cannabis plants. ◉ Eggs laid by stink bugs on leaves are a common symptom. ◉ Stink bugs are attracted to both indoor and outdoor marijuana plants. ◉ They feed on seeds, flowers, and leaves, causing damage.
Symptoms
◉ Presence of stink bug eggs on cannabis leaves, resembling those of conchuela stink bugs. ◉ Colonization of cannabis plants by red-shouldered stink bug nymphs. ◉ Stink bugs feed on seeds and flowers, leading to withering and damage. ◉ Drooping leaves that turn pinkish red are observed in affected plants.
Corrective Actions
◉ Clean the surrounding area: Remove any fallen leaves and debris around the plants to eliminate hiding spots for bugs. Weed removal is especially crucial in outdoor settings. ◉ Remove or spray off stink bugs: Carefully collect stink bugs and their eggs from the plants, ensuring they are captured in a container. Avoid crushing the bugs, as they release an unpleasant odor. Employ plain water or a mixture of soapy water or bug killer to spray the bugs off the plants. Indoor growers can consider using a vacuum to aid in bug removal. ◉ Floating row covers: Outdoor growers can utilize floating row covers, which act as physical barriers preventing bugs from accessing the plants. These covers are lightweight and breathable, allowing for proper light penetration and irrigation. ◉ Vigilance for eggs: Regularly inspect plants for stink bug eggs and promptly remove them, along with any young bugs, to prevent infestations from escalating. ◉ Neem oil: Neem oil, an organic and safe insecticide, can be effective against stink bugs, particularly eggs and young bugs. However, older stink bugs may possess a protective coating that renders them less susceptible to neem oil. Ensure that neem oil does not come into contact with buds, as it can negatively affect their taste and aroma. ◉ By implementing these measures and maintaining a proactive approach, growers can mitigate the impact of stink bugs on their cannabis plants.
