Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) is a virus commonly found in tobacco plants. It causes splotchy or twisted leaves, mottling symptoms (resembling a "mosaic" pattern), slowed growth, and reduced yields. TMV has been detected in cannabis plants, along with other mosaic viruses like cucumber mosaic virus and alfalfa mosaic virus. However, widespread transmission of mosaic viruses in cannabis plants hasn't been extensively documented. Some infected plants may not show visible symptoms, and some seemingly healthy plants may still carry the virus.
Cause of Issue
◉ TMV is caused by the tobacco mosaic virus.
◉ It spreads through direct contact between infected and healthy plants.
◉ Transmission can also occur through contaminated hands, tools, and clothing.
Symptoms
◉ Yellow striped speckles on the leaves.
◉ Twisted growth.
These symptoms can also be caused by other factors such as heat, root problems, stress, or nutrient deficiencies.
◉ Not all infected plants show visible symptoms, and some seemingly healthy plants may still carry the virus.
Corrective Actions
◉ There is no cure for TMV in plants.
◉ Infected cannabis plants carry the virus indefinitely, even without symptoms.
◉ Carefully remove infected plants and prevent the virus from spreading to healthy ones.
◉ In greenhouse and commercial operations:
Dispose of affected plants and the soil they were growing in. And implement strict hand-washing policies.
◉ TMV may not kill cannabis plants, but it can slow their growth and reduce yields.
◉ Keep infected plants away from the rest of the garden.
