If your cannabis plant is drooping, it could be a sign of either overwatering or underwatering. In this case, we will focus on the symptoms and solutions for underwatering. When a plant is underwatered, it may display certain characteristics. The leaves tend to feel "papery" and thin since they lack water content. In contrast to overwatering, where the leaves feel bloated and swollen, underwatered leaves may become yellow and show signs of nutrient deficiencies. Underwatering can cause seedlings to have dry growing mediums and papery leaves, while larger plants may experience wilting and drooping.
Cause of Issue
◉ Dry soil or soilless medium every time you water
◉ Dried-out roots
Insufficient watering frequency or amount
◉ Plant outgrowing its pot
Strict watering schedule without considering soil condition
Symptoms
◉ Drooping: The plant may appear droopy and wilted, but it often recovers after being watered.
◉ Thin and papery leaves: The leaves may feel thin and lacking water content.
◉ Yellowing leaves: Chronic underwatering can lead to yellow leaves and nutrient deficiencies.
◉ Curling and burnt leaf tips: Leaves may exhibit clawing, curling, and burnt tips, resembling nutrient burn. These symptoms occur because the plant does not receive enough water on a regular basis.
Corrective Actions
◉ Water your plant before the leaves start drooping. It is recommended to let the growing medium dry out a bit after watering, but you should not wait until the plant shows signs of drooping.
◉ Proper watering technique: Wait until the top of the growing medium is dry about a half inch deep (up to your first knuckle) before watering again. Water until you get a little runoff, around 10-20% extra runoff water if using nutrients.
◉ Evaluate drainage: If water does not come out quickly or the pots take longer than five days to dry out, there may be a drainage problem. Ensure proper drainage or adjust the amount of water given.
◉ Consider pot size and transplanting: If the plant has outgrown its pot, it may need to be transplanted into a larger one.
◉ Observe plant response: Pay attention to how your plant reacts to watering and adjust the frequency and amount of water accordingly.
◉ Remember, it's crucial to find the right balance between underwatering and overwatering to ensure the optimal growth and health of your cannabis plant.
