A cannabis zinc deficiency is characterized by yellowing of the younger leaves between the veins, discoloration and dying of leaf tips, a banded appearance on the leaves, and stunted vertical growth. If the deficiency persists, the flowers of a budding plant may stop growing or even die.

Cause of Issue
◉ Stressful conditions can trigger a zinc deficiency in cannabis plants. ◉ High pH levels at the roots can lead to zinc becoming locked and less available for absorption. ◉ The use of heavily filtered or reverse osmosis (RO) water, which removes zinc, can contribute to deficiencies. ◉ Root problems or overwatering can also contribute to the development of zinc deficiencies in cannabis plants.
Symptoms
◉ Yellowing of younger leaves between the veins. ◉ Discolored and dying leaf tips. ◉ Banded appearance on the leaves. ◉ Stunted vertical growth. ◉ Decreased space between new nodes, causing leaves to bunch together. ◉ Flowers may stop growing or die if the deficiency persists.
Corrective Actions
◉ Adjust pH to the correct range: Ensure that the pH at the roots is within the optimal range. In soil, zinc is best absorbed at pH levels between 6.0 and 6.5, while in hydroponic systems, the optimal range is 5.5 to 6.0. ◉ Provide the right nutrients: Most growers do not need to add more zinc since it is already present in tap water and cannabis-friendly nutrients. Zinc deficiencies are more likely to occur when using heavily filtered or reverse osmosis (RO) water. ◉ Take good care of the roots: Maintain proper watering practices and avoid overwatering, as root problems and overwatering can contribute to zinc deficiencies. ◉ Monitor for recovery: After implementing the above steps, observe if the zinc deficiency starts to improve within a few days to a week. While damaged leaves may not fully recover, the absence of symptoms on new leaves indicates progress.
